The Friends of The Woodlawn Cemetery welcomes you to renew or establish your relationship with one of the world’s truly great cemeteries.  Woodlawn’s 400 acres of rolling hills, spectacular trees and shrubbery and majestic mausoleums and memorials invite you to step out of today’s hustle and bustle into a world outside of time.  Be prepared to be awed.

Friends of the Woodlawn Cemetery is a private not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization established in 2000 to accomplish the following goals:

  • To protect, restore and preserve the mausoleums, monuments and other structures located on the grounds of The Woodlawn Cemetery that are significant from the historical, architectural or aesthetic point of view
  • To sponsor educational and cultural programs, including lectures, tours, and concerts
  • To protect, conserve or cultivate the trees and other flora on the grounds
  • To protect the conservation of birds and other fauna on the grounds.

The Friends accepts donations from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies. Woodlawn is one of the most historic and notable cemeteries of the world. Your generous gift will help preserve and enhance one of New York City’s irreplaceable treasures. Thank You!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Friends of the Woodlawn Cemetery welcome individuals interested in the cemetery to volunteer to assist with our many projects. The Friends office is located in the gatehouse next to the Jerome Avenue entrance.

TOUR PROGRAM: Thousands of tourists, students, and families visit the Woodlawn Cemetery each year. Volunteer PROGRAM GUIDES are needed to lead 2-hour educational walking tours of the Woodlawn Cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY ARCHIVES: The Friends of Woodlawn maintain an archive documenting the lives and careers of the individuals interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Volunteer researchers can contribute time researching individuals and responding to requests for information.

VETERANS PROJECT: Each Memorial Day Weekend, the Friends of the Woodlawn Cemetery mark the graves of the Veterans in our care by placing flags on their graves. Volunteers are needed to help place the flags and to read names at our "Reading of the Roster" ceremony in the Woolworth Chapel.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Each year, the Friends of The Woodlawn Cemetery organize tours, programs, lectures and concerts. Volunteers are needed to help distribute information, serve refreshments and welcome guests.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Friends of the Woodlawn Cemetery, please contact: friends@thewoodlawncemetery.org or call (718) 920-1470.

INTERN PROGRAM

The Friends of The Woodlawn Cemetery provide opportunities for students studying Art History, Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, Archival Records, American History, American Culture and other related fields.

Interested students should provide a project summary of their interest, availability, and purpose of their project. After the proposed project is approved students will be able to work in the archives of the cemetery. Occasionally grant funds are available for students at the graduate level to receive stipends for their work.

Projects currently needing intern involvement include:

  • Research and writing of biographical sketches for use in tour programs

  • Preparing condition assessments of memorials and mausoleums

  • Writing histories of significant sculpture and private mausoleums

  • Researching landscape designs and creating an inventory of designers

To propose an Intern Project, email a summary of your interest to friends@thewoodlawncemetery.org or call the Friends Office at (718) 920-1470.
